EBA Open Seminar is a monthly activity that welcomes open discussions on a wide range of issues within the EBA framework.

The 10th EBA Open Seminar features the topic “Mining and the Environment”.

Abstract: The small-scaled mining industry in the Philippines has a big impact to the water environment both the surface water and the groundwater due to the release of sediments and heavy metals such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) during the processing of the mineral ores. Several small-scaled mining processing sites are still using mercury for the amalgation process in the recovery of gold. In this EBA Open Seminar, lectures will be given to discuss the impact of small-scaled mining into the Environment and how a research team in UP Diliman is helping the small scale mining industry to have a cleaner technology in both processing the mineral ore and the resulting wastewater that are discharged to the nearby surface waters.
