We are now calling for participants in Sanriku Fieldwork scheduled in August, 2014

About the Fieldwork

The fieldwork is an excellent opportunity for students to capture with their own eyes what happened during Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011and its aftermath until today in 7 port cities in Sanriku area- the hardest hit area. Before the fieldwork, the students will be prepared with preliminary understanding not only of the disaster situation but also of what decisions the local people had to make, what preparation schools may have made and what evacuation they followed on that day. During the fieldwork, the students will have a chance to meet with the local people and listen to their own stories. These witness accounts should help the students either to reinforce or correct their initial impressions about the disaster situation. One may start thinking about what he or she can do to prevent a similar disaster to happen in the face of overwhelming energy of the nature. At the end of the fieldwork, the students will have a small workshop in Ozuchi with local teachers about education on disaster prevention and join local children’s activities in finding the task for the future and the key to a disaster free future.
