13th EBA Open Seminar Report: Some Initiatives in Sustainable Development at USM

The 13th EBA Consortium Open Seminar, hosted by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on November 5th 2014, provides a series of lectures on the topic of Some Initiatives in Sustainable Development at USM. Selected Sustainability Initiatives, by Dr. Suzyrman Sibly of the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) on (TBA), introduces the concept of Sustainability from the perspective of USM and how USM has incorporated the idea into actual practices (university garden) at its own campus and into its program for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Geo-hazard Management with Trusted Information Sharing by Assoc. Prof. Chan Huah Yong of the School of Computer Sciences introduces the construction of an early warning system with trusted information sharing as a comprehensive disaster information database including satellite observation data, flood/ landslide hazard data and disaster mitigation information to lay the foundation for a risk management system of flood/landslide disaster considering the effective utilization of risk information between local government and community

Life Sciences on Management and Conservation of Fisheries – A DNA Barcoding Approach by Prof. Siti Azizah Mohd. Nor, Director of the Centre for Research Initiative (CRI)

Understanding the Effects of Marine Biodiversity on Communities and Ecosystem  by Presentation by Dr. Khairun Yahya of the School of Biological Sciences on Research, introduce ecosystem health status and indicator approach to to identify spatial and temporal modifications of marine ecosystem.  A preview of the upcoming EBA fieldwork on marine biodiversity hosted by USM (expected to be in June 2015) was also introduced at the end of the presentation.
