 About the Fieldwork

This is going to be the second time EBA hosts  Fujiyoshida fieldwork. The theme of the fieldwork is “Monitoring wildlife and plants”, with the focus on following activities: 1) quadrat sampling (such as method to record vegetation community types and method to measure tree height and DBH (Diameter at Breast Height) among others), mapping vegetation cover and calculating biomass energy; and 2) monitoring mammals by camera traps.

Throughout the fieldwork, the students, under the instruction of Dr. Tomoko Doko and Dr. Wenbo Chen will have an opportunity to approach the study of environment from perspectives of both natural sciences and social sciences and will learn various surveying skills including how to plan and conduct a field survey, how to analyze collected data, and how to prepare a field report. The highlight of the fieldwork is that students will be equipped with “skills”, instead of specific methods, in order for them to be independent and at the same time flexible while preparing and conducting their own field research. The students will also be trained with how to work in groups during fieldwork-preparation lectures and during the fieldwork. Towards the end of the fieldwork, the students are expected to deliver presentations based on findings from the fieldwork before local residents in Fujiyoshida.

Language Requirement: This is English class. No Japanese skill is required. Communication skill in English is most important to participate to this class.

Target and Capacity: The fieldwork is for both undergraduate and graduate students from EBA partner universities.

Selection process:

For Keio students: Announcement is being released soon. Stay tuned!

For ASEAN students, EBA local contacts (http://www.eba-consortium.asia/?page_id=1331) will have a separate announcement and selection process.

*Please note that we do not accept application from individual students without the acknowledgement of their school.
