Fieldwork Content:
The theme of the fieldwork is “The practices on Water Resources Management in a Gradient Polluted Strategic River of Citarum River of West Java Province, Indonesia”.

The purpose of this fieldwork is shaping students who have the capacity to:

  1. Explain and discuss the current situation in the use and management of water in Citarum River Basin.
  2. Discuss the role of central and local governments, NGOs, the private sector and local residents, and their initiatives for sustainable use and management of water in this area.
  3. Evaluating the results of the analysis of data and information that is collected in the work field.
  4. Set a target of group through discussion within the group based on the data and information collected in the field.
  5. Prepare a directing plan to be presented.
  6. Evaluating the plan that has been presented.

 
About CITARUM River Basin:
The Citarum river basin is an important water resource in Indonesia. The basin is the most strategic river basin in the country, with a population of almost 28 million people in 2004 (more than 72% of the provincial total). There are three hydroelectric dams (Saguling, Cirata, and Jatiluhur Dam) located at the upper section of the basin producing an aggregate of 1,400 megawatts. The total area of irrigated agricultural land is over 400,000 km2. The Citarum River system also supplies 80% of Jakarta’s raw water (from Jatiluhur Dam). The water resources of the rivers and groundwater systems in the basin are critical to social and economic development of the country. They are essential for urban and industrial development (particularly in Jakarta and Bandung areas) including export industry, agricultural production through major irrigation systems, rural water supplies, electricity generation though hydropower, and fisheries. While the water resources of the Citarum River Basin are relatively abundant (on average), competition for these resources has increased significantly over the past 20 years leading to a situation of acute water stress and depletion of aquifers in some places. Rapid urbanization has significantly increased the exposure to flood risk and generation of pollution. Environmental degradation has reached a level that compromises public health and livelihoods, particularly for the urban and rural poor, and incurs additional economic and financial costs related to the source of bulk water supply and its treatment. There has been a lot of research and discussions on improving the condition of Citarum River Basin, especially the pollution problem, but so far there has been no significant improvement. Since the area is so large, it involves a variety of stakeholders, making conflicts among their interests in the river basin very severe and complex.

 
About Water Quality in Citarum River:
Pollution of surface water in the Upper Citarum basin (u/s Saguling Dam) has reached an alarming stage. BOD content at all locations in upper Citarum is relatively high, and ranges from 11 mg/l to 36 mg/l. The highest BOD content of 36 mg/l was observed at Curug Jompong at the inlet of the Saguling Dam. Concentration of pathogenic bacteria, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, some heavy metals currently exceed water quality standards, especially in the dry season. In the downstream of Jatiluhur, the water quality situation is less severe than upstream of Saguling Dam, but the area along West Tarum Canal (WTC) suffers from degrading water quality, caused by the discharge of untreated domestic and wastewater into canal.

 
Location:
This fieldwork will be held in ITB Campus at Ganesha for the implementation of lectures and presentation/discussion of field practice material report, and the outside of the ITB Campus (Citarum River Basin) from the upper area of Citarum River Basin (Cisanti Lake), middle part (Saguling and Cirata Dams), and downstream area (Jatiluhur Dam) for field practice.

The students will be introduced to some form of ecosystem management of water resources as an understanding media of knowledge that is acquired in the classroom.

The location of field practice are:

  1. Cisanti Lake, Bandung Regency, West Java Province
  2. Textile Industries Area, Majalaya, Bandung Regency, West Java Province
  3. Dara Ulin Eco-Village, Bandung Regency, West Java Province.
  4. Saguling and Cirata Dam (middle stream of Citarum River Basin)
  5. Jatiluhur Dam (downstream of Citarum River Basin)

How to apply: (for Keio students)
Both undergraduates and graduate students (who are able to communicate in English) are eligible for the program.

All you have to do is:

  • Fill out APPLICATION FORM (from: http://goo.gl/vmX1TK) in English
  • Write an 300-word essay stating your interest in the theme of the fieldwork (either in English or Japanese)

Then submit these two materials to eba-submit@ml.keio.jp with subject: “Indonesia Fieldwork Application- Your Name”. The deadline is 23:59 JST, Friday, 16 October 2015. Screening result will be announced in the following week.

 
Costs:
Keio students should pay the airplane ticket fee (to/from Bandung) on your own. However, the good news for Japanese students is if selected, you are also eligible to apply for JASSO scholarship (70,000 JPY) which should help cover part of your Fieldwork related expenses.

In addition to the airplane ticket fee, EBA committee will collect a participation fee. For now, the participation fee has not been decided yet as the preparation work is still undergoing. However, it should be around 30,000〜50,000 JPY (including accommodation, local transportation, part of the food costs, and other services during the trip).
