Tsuruoka Fieldwork 2016

Filed in 2016, 2016, Fieldwork, Fieldwork & Internship, News by on April 20, 2016

We are now calling for participants in Tsuruoka Fieldwork scheduled in 2016 (August 18-27), in Yamagata Prefecture.

 About the fieldwork

Biodiversity is one of the features of dynamic ecosystems, and recent advances in genetics have revealed that organisms not only differ from each other at the species level, but that individuals within a population also differ slightly from one another at the genetic level. During this fieldwork, students will explore both levels of biodiversity; at the ecosystems level through the collection and identification of natural micro-organisms present in their surroundings, and at the species level through experimental & computational analysis of DNA sequences.

*Keio University Institute for Advanced Biosciences (IAB) is located in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, nominated in 2014 by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy. This state-of-the-art biological research institute was founded in 2001 by Dr. Masaru Tomita, with support from Yamagata Prefecture and Tsuruoka city. A young and dynamic environment as well as a high degree of research freedom is at the core of innovation, and this is reflected not only on an academic level through publication in major science journals, but also through the business successes of no less than 5 venture companies stemming directly from IAB, including metabolomics pioneer Human Metabolome Technologies, Inc. and spider silk bioengineering by Spiber, Inc.. Participating students will have a chance to learn more about these companies, and to interact with IAB research staff.
