EBA Language Course 2016: Elementary Japanese Conversation

EBA Consortium is now calling for participants in EBA Language Course 2016- Elementary Japanese Conversation.

Course Summary:

This course is mainly targeted to the students who plan to participate in EBA fieldwork programmes in Japan.
The purpose of the course is to provide students with Japanese basic vocabularies and expressions used in several situations.
Students can also learn some basic phrase patterns which can be employed in a brief presentation.

At the end of this course, students will become able to:
1) communicate with local Japanese people with simple Japanese.
2) use simple Japanese phrase patterns when they make a final presentation after the fieldwork.

Time:
24 November 2016 – 26 January 2017, 18:15-19:45 JST (UTC + 9) every Monday and Thursday.
*Except 26 & 29 December 2016, 2, 5 & 9 January 2017.

Prerequisites:
Students should have a basic knowledge of Japanese letters, “Hiragana” and “Katakana” (“Kanji” is not necessary).

Students Screening:
A number of students in the class is scheduled about 20.
The student screening will be done by submitted entry sheet and the result of the screening will be announced around 3 November 2016.

Requirement:
Students must be from one of the EBA partner universities and his/her command of Japanese is expected to be at introductory or beginner level.

Special equipment of software to prepare:
PC (when students join the class via “V-cube(web conference system)”).
*How to join the class will be announced by our technical assistant before each lesson by email.

#Lesson 3 (1 December): Ask for permission
-Asking for permission to take the day off

#Lesson 4 (5 December): At the airport
-Asking someone the location of a certain facility
-Numbers and Counters (1)

#Lesson 5  (8 December): At the station (1)
-Asking someone how to get your destination
-Numbers and Counters (2)

#Lesson 6  (12 December): At the station (2)
-Getting familiar with several words which can be seen at the station
-Time, Days of the week

#Lesson 7 (15 December): At the station (3)
-Getting familiar with announcements at the station

#Lesson 8 (19 December): At a convenience store (1)
-Getting fast food at a convenience store
-Japanese Currency

#Lesson 9 (22 December): At a convenience store (2)
-Getting familiar with electronic appliance in a convenience store
-Reading food labeling

#Lesson 10 (12 January): In case of emergency
-Asking for help in an emergency case

#Lesson 11 (16 January)~Lesson 13 (23 January): Make a presentation
-Essential expressions in the introduction part, main body part, conclusion part and Q&A session
-Expressions for using numbers
-Essential expressions for explaining graphs, charts and tables

#Lesson 14 (26 January): Presentations by students

[Note]

• Materials: Handout distributed by lecturer before each lesson.
• Assignments, Examination and Grade Evaluation: Pass (P) or Fail (F)
  • You must attend at least 10 out of 14 lessons.
  • Each lesson will be recorded and its video will be posted onto Edmodo, a free LMS online.
    If you are absent from class, you should watch the video of the lesson you missed and submit the assignment by the designated day. You won’t be marked absent if you submit the assignment after watching the video.
    *Only the students who are allowed to take this course will be informed how to access Edmodo later.
  • You must submit the assignment by the designated deadlines. Late submission may affect your evaluation.

Those who have never studied Japanese before are highly recommended to attend a preparation course before taking EBA LANGUAGE COURSE. If you want to take this course, please tick a box of “preparation course” on the entry sheet.
This course will be held as a following schedule.

#Preparation 1 (7 November):
-Introducing Japanese letters (Hiragana/Katakana)

#Preparation 2 (10 November):
-Introducing Japanese basic grammar (Sentence structure, Japanese particles etc.)
