Myanmar Fieldwork 2017: Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Bagan
We EBA are now calling for participants in Bagan Fieldwork (Myanmar) 2017.
Bagan is an ancient city in Mandalay Region of Myanmar. Bagan is well-known for the presence of thousands of temples and pagodas that were built during the height of Bagan Kingdom between 11th and 13th centuries. Over the course of time, under different impacts, many of the temples and pagodas have disappeared or deteriorated. The Bagan fieldwork, therefore, focuses on highlighting the impacts of surrounding living environments (human, animals and plants) and natural disasters (earthquake, etc.) on Myanmar Cultural Heritage in Bagan.
Fieldwork Period: Feb 22-March 3, 2017
Fieldwork Site: Bagan City, Mandalay, Myanmar

Computer Studies Yangon (UCSY), Myanmar
Fieldwork Purposes:
1) Investigate and analyze the impacts of the construction of hotels that are on the rise in Bagan.
2) Investigate and analyze the impacts of illegal settlements and waste dumping area on the cultural Heritage Site.
3) Analyze damages to the temples and pagodas caused by earthquakes, especially the recent one in August, 2016.
4) Detect uncovered pagodas and temples
Fieldwork Methodologies
– Apply Geographic Information System
– Data management techniques
– Image processing is applied if necessary.
The following steps are also included for data collecting:
– Define the detecting area in Bagan.
– Historical Data Acquisition via Google map
– Current Data Acquisition: prior acquisition and fieldwork trip acquisition

Feb 23-24 : Orientation of fieldwork and Lectures on GIS and Data Management
Feb 25-27: Bagan Field Trip ( 3 days and 2 Nights)
Feb 28- March 1: Preparation for Final Presentation
March 1: Final Presentation
March 2: One-day Tour in Yangon
March 3 : Leave Yangon
Participation Requirements
Both undergraduates and graduate students who are able to communicate in English are eligible for the program. Also, once accepted, participants are required to participate in all fieldwork related activities under EBA program.
Capacity: 15 Keio students (undergraduates and graduates)
Selection process (only Keio Students):
All you have to do is:
- Fill out APPLICATION FORM (from: http://goo.gl/vmX1TK) in English
- Write an 300-word essay stating your interest in the theme of the fieldwork (either in English or Japanese)
- Grade report of the previous year (前学年成績表) (only to Japanese citizens(日本国籍の学生のみ申請可能). For first-year students (undergraduates and graduates) ,please submit Grade report of Spring semester
Then submit the materials to eba-submit@ml.keio.jp with subject: “Myanmar Fieldwork 2017 Application- Your Name”. The deadline is November 21st, 2016 (Monday). Screening result will be announced in the following week.
Costs:
Keio students should pay the airplane ticket fee on your own. However, the good news for Japanese students is, if selected, you are also eligible to apply for JASSO scholarship (70,000 JPY) which should help cover part of your Fieldwork related expenses.
In addition to the airplane ticket fee, EBA committee will collect a participation fee. For now, the participation fee has not been decided yet as the preparation work is still undergoing. It should be around ¥30,000 ~ ¥50,000.
