2nd EBA Open Seminar – Report

On October 2nd, the 2nd EBA Consortium Open Seminar was held as an online seminar. The EBA Consortium would like to thank all those who attend and/or supported. The following universities attended the open seminar:

• University of the Philippines (UP) – Philippines
• Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) – Malaysia
• University of Malaya (UM) – Malaysia
• Chulalongkorn University (CU) – Thailand
• Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) – Indonesia
• Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) – Vietnam
• Keio University (KEIO) – Japan with participation from 3 locations:
o Keio Hiyoshi Campus
o Keio Yagami Campus
o Keio SFC Campus

Some other students also attended the events from different locations.

Opening and Greetings

The event was opened by Prof. Jun Murai who then gave the authority to Prof. Keiko Okawa to lead the 2nd EBA open seminar. After each location performed a short introduction, the first session begins.

Session 1 – Overview of the Minamata Fieldwork 2013 Summer by Prof. Hikaru Kobayashi of the Keio University

Prof. Hikaru Kobayashi explains the overview of Minamata Fieldwork 2013 which explains the pollution damages and eco-oriented restoration of damage community.

Prof. Jun Murai raises the concern about language barrier during the fieldwork to which Prof. Hikaru Kobayashi responded that the interpreter they hired was people who had knowledge about the Minamata incident so most of the translation was done perfectly.

Session 2 – Students Presentation

Students who went to the Minamata fieldwork made presentations about their fieldwork. The presentation was separated into 3 main topics with 2 groups each.

– Avoid environmental disaster
– Eco-industry
– Nature-based activities

Some new ideas to help the Minamata area were presented such as voluntourism which is a combination of volunteer and tourism, or making a specific festival and celebration to help tourism and make an example that even though disaster occurred, Minamata can still be a great tourism location.

The 2nd EBA Open Seminar ends after the last student presentation. The upcoming programs and discussion session was cancelled due to insufficient time.
