  1. About the program
    Keio University offers Minamata field work program in August 2013.  This program is open for EBA Consortium member universities.  Participants will receive a credit from the EBA Consortium. This program is made up with a workshop and the fielwork.  Participants will learn basic methods and philosophy of “Evidence Based Approach” at the workshop before the field work.  After the workshop, participants will visit Minamata city to learn overview of the issue from specialists, then visit the factory, work place for the victims and other related facilities to see and hear the evidence from local residents.  Based on the evidence, participants will have a group work discussion.  The group is formed both from Japanese and ASEAN students.
  2. What’s Minamata
    Minamata city is located in Kyushu island which is south part of Japan.  The city is known for Minamata disease which is caused by mercury pollution from a chemical factory in 1950’s. It is the first disease caused by food chain due to environmental pollution.
  3. Language Requirement
    All Lecture will be provided in English and Japanese.  No Japanese skill is required.Participants should have conversational skill in English (about TOEIC 700).   TOEIC score is not required.
  4. Target and Capacity
    This program is for both undergraduate and graduate student.
    -10 participants from ASEAN country
    -10 Japanese participants
  5. Schedule
    • August 5th (Mon) – Departing to Japan
    • August 6th (Tue) – Arriving Tokyo & Introductory Workshop in Keio University Mita Campus
    • August 7th (Wed) – August 10th (Sat) – Minamata Fieldwork
    • August 10th (Sat) – Leaving Japan

  6. Cost and Support
    The EBA consortium will support following:
    -International air fare
    -Transportation in Japan
    -Hotel stay in Japan
    Participants bear the following costs:
    – travel insurance (at your own)
    – food (about JPY10,000?)
